Mandatory Credit: Jed Jacobsohn /Allsport (Jed Jacobsohn, Getty Images) Sam is coming to the Fever from the Portland Trail Blazers , where she was the scouting manager focusing on player evaluation and pre-draft scouting. Her addition is part of a broader focus for the Fever to improve their scouting and player evaluation expertise, sources said, and conversations about her joining the organization started over the summer.

Sam will primarily work with the scouting staff and coaching staff on personnel and talent identification. In the short term, Sam will work on scouting during the NCAA women's basketball season, which begins Sunday.

Sam turned to the business operations side after 10 years playing in the WNBA, including one with the Fever in 2007. She won two championships (Seattle, 2004; Detroit, 2008) in her playing career.

She got a degree in human and organizational development from Vanderbilt in 1996, and holds a global management certificate from NYU and an NBA CBA certification.
