Irene Miller, 50, is accused of leavingher four children without overnight adult supervision while she traveled to Las Vegas for work

Miller told police she had hired a babysitter to check on the children before and after school but did not require overnight supervision

The children’s father, who faces a battery charge stemming from an alleged assault on Irene, agreed to take them in after deputies discovered they were home alone

The woman at the center of child neglect allegations reportedly hung up on officers when they called to tell her that her son was injured in a dumbbell accident while she was out of state.

Irene Miller, 50, was arrested on Friday, Oct. 23, two days after her 9-year-old son suffered a head injury while allegedly left alone for days at home with his three siblings, ages 11, 12 and 14.

Miller was in Las Vegas for work at the time. She told deputies she had hired a babysitter to check on the children before and after school but had not required the sitter to stay overnight, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies called Miller on Oct. 21 to tell her that her son was being taken to the hospital, she was “very dismissive,” Osceola County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kim Montes tells PEOPLE.

“She basically told the deputy that she was working and that she did not have time to talk to her right now, and disconnected the phone,” Montes claims.

The 9-year-old was released hours after the accident and the kids were placed with their father Mark Miller, who was not living at home due to a restraining order following an assault allegation by Irene in August. (Mark has pleaded not guilty to battery charges in connection with the allegations.)

“The [responding] deputy noted that the children were very happy to see their father,” Montes tells PEOPLE.

Mark, 53, has set up a GoFundMe to assist him with the costs of staying at a motel with the children, adding that his daughter has 80% hearing loss and has misplaced her hearing aid.

In the fundraiser, Mark initially said he was raising funds as the “unexpected sole caregiver.” In an update to the fundraiser, Mark said he had exhausted his savings because of mounting legal fees related to the couple’s divorce and custody proceedings.

“I’m not asking anyone to take sides or judge their mother,” he wrote in the fundraiser. “My only goal is to give our children the love, security, and stability they deserve.”

Irene, who had been gone since Oct. 18, was arrested upon her return to Florida on Friday, OCSO said online alongside a video of her arrest.

She declined to speak to investigators, Montes tells PEOPLE.

Irene has been charged with four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm, and was released on bond on Saturday.
